Not A Tame Lion by Terry Glaspey

C.S. Lewis, a prominent Christian writer, continues to be a significant figure even after his passing in 1963. His fiction, notably the beloved Chronicles of Narnia, has a wide appeal among Christians and non-Christians. However, it is his theological writings that have truly reshaped the way Christians perceive their faith, demonstrating that Christianity is not just a matter of belief but also a logical truth that can be reasoned.

In Not A Tame Lion: The Life, Teachings, And Legacy Of C. S. Lewis, Terry Glaspey masterfully blends biographical insight with Mr. Lewis’s core beliefs. The book is a delight to read. Its short chapters, usually about 3 -4 pages, make it easy to read even when only short amounts of time are available.

It was interesting to learn that C.S. Lewis almost abandoned his writing of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe because his friend J.R.R. Tolkien disliked it so much. Thankfully, others encouraged him to continue, and we now have one of the most loved children’s books available. This shows that even great men like J.R.R. Tolkien, with his famous Lord Of The Rings series, can make mistakes. If we are doing something worthwhile, let's not give up, even as we realize it won’t meet everyone’s tastes.

I was interested to learn that Sir Winston Churchill offered C. S. Lewis the highest civilian award, the honorary title of Commander of the British Empire. C.S. Lewis turned down the award, although he admired Sir. Churchill, because he did not want his writing to be associated with any political party. Although he spoke out on many political subjects, C.S. Lewis did it from a moral and ethical point-of-view, not because of the politics of any party. He saw the danger of Christianity being associated with a political party rather than demanding all political parties submit themselves to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

While hard-core fans of C.S. Lewis may not find anything new in Not A Time Lion, it is a well-written, refreshing overview of his life and beliefs. It is a great introduction to this famous Christian author and a quick reference for core facts and beliefs.
