Michael L. Brown surveys the North American church today and considers how it compares with the church in the New Testament and centuries past. We claim God is working in our midst. We rejoice in an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. We are excited when people talk in tongues or fall down when they are prayed for.
Is this what a move of God really looks like? Where are the blind eyes being opened? When was the last time you saw someone raised from the dead? Where are the sinners weeping in repentance?
Whatever Happened To The Power Of God? and its companion book, Its Time To Rock The Boat, challenge their readers to take an honest look at Christianity as they have experienced it. These books shine a light on our self-deception. If we really are in a close relationship with God, if the Holy Spirit is moving in our midst, where is the fruit?
Many people would rather play church than genuinely enter God’s presence. As Michael L. Brown points out, being in a mighty move of God while still trying to hold onto a sinful lifestyle is deadly. Remember Ananias and Sapphira? Paul mentioned that others had died or were sick because they abused the communion table. God is serious, and if we want to see God move, we must also be serious.
We need to stop deceiving ourselves. An emotional high in a church service is not what Christ died for. We must start with repentance. We must burn our idols and focus on God. God is holy, and He requires a holy people.
If you are intent on knowing God and following Him, then these books are a great source of challenge and inspiration. Give your Christian life an honest appraisal. Are you seeing the power of God and the fruit of the Spirit in your life? If not, don’t feel discouraged or ashamed, but use it as motivation to pursue holiness and enter the Holy Place. All else will flow from that relationship with God for His glory and the benefit of those around you.
