Yours Till Heaven is the untold love story between Charles and Susie Spurgeon. This is not the type of book I would typically read, but I found it fascinating. Charles Spurgeon has been called the Prince of Preachers and is one of the best-known Christian preachers throughout history. He often spoke ten times a week, and it is estimated that in his lifetime, about ten million people heard him. His books are still being read and used. At times, he preached to thousands, and they had to lock the doors to prevent crowds from forcing themselves into buildings already full.
Yet we also see the human side of Charles Spurgeon, a man of great intellect who would compromise his health with overwork - up to eighteen hours a day - to minister to people. He was a man who faced mental health challenges and deep depression as well as, at times, physically crippling sicknesses. He likely would have vanished into obscurity without his intense love for his loyal and supportive wife.
Susie and Charles met when he moved to London to pastor New Park Street Chapel. From meeting each other until being married was less than a year. Their love for each other was surpassed only by their passion for Jesus Christ. It was a love that grew year by year and never waned. On the many occasions when ministry forced Charles to be away from his beloved, he would write letters daily to Susie describing in detail where he was and what was happening and declaring his love with all his writing skills. When she was bedridden, he would be by her side, making sure her every need and comfort was being looked after.
They were a couple totally dedicated to God and each other through life's ups and downs. This is an excellent choice if you are looking for an inspirational book about how beautiful a marriage can be. You can walk with the Spurgeons through the trials and tribulations of life and see them emerge triumphantly. When many ministry couples today struggle with interpersonal relationships, it is rewarding to read about a couple who knew how to do it right Til Heaven.
